Containers
One of the criteria for loading vessels in the sense of an intermodal transportation unit is a storage capacity of more than 3 cubic meters and a length of at least 6 meters (20 foot). Intermodal transportation units, which exceed 12.192 m (40 foot) in length or 2.438 m (8 foot) in height or width, can only be used to carry freight on the railroad with advanced approval of the corresponding railroad. (approval for exceeding loading gauge).
Handling technology
Intermodal transport units (ITU) are handled vertically using a crane or mobile equipment.
Crane
The ITUs are directly transferred between ship, road vehicle or storage space and rail container using a gantry crane. Technically standardized corner fittings and edges make it easy to handle the container using the lifting gear of the crane.
Mobile equipment
Appropriate forklift vehicles (side and front forklifts) move the ITUs between the road and rail vehicle. Certain special vehicles used for delivery and collection between customers and terminal have suitable crane equipment, with which the handling process can also be carried out.
